CV Writing Support

Service overview

What you get with CV Writing Support

A CV for a graduate scheme in Manchester, a résumé for an internship in Chicago and a Lebenslauf for a working-student role in Munich are three different documents built from the same set of facts. AMDEX Scholar Labs works on the CV you have already written and shows you what each market expects: length, whether a photograph belongs on the page, which personal details to strip out, how referees are handled, and how to phrase a line so a reader sees the outcome rather than the job description. We also check the file against the way applicant tracking systems such as Workday, Taleo and Greenhouse read a document — top to bottom, one column, standard headings — because a two-column template that looks tidy on screen often arrives scrambled. Academic CVs for PhD and research applications are treated separately, with publications, conference presentations and an ORCID iD set out the way search committees expect to find them.
  • Guidance built around your own brief and your marking rubric
  • Matched to a specialist who works in your subject area
  • Referencing explained and checked in your institution’s style — APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago and more
  • Feedback on your drafts while there is still time to act on it
  • Worked examples supplied as labelled models to study and cite, never to submit
  • Human expertise — nothing here is generated by AI

What do you need assistance with?

What changes when the same CV goes to London, Boston, Munich and Dubai?

The facts stay the same; the conventions do not. In Great Britain age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, and in Ireland under the Employment Equality Acts 1998–2015 — in both markets a two-page CV with no photograph and no date of birth is the norm, so handing employers data they have no legitimate need for only invites bias. North American résumés drop the same details and run to one page early in a career. Germany expects a tabellarischer Lebenslauf, usually with a photograph and with scanned certificates attached. The UAE runs the other way: nationality, date of birth, a headshot and current visa status all sit normally on the first page.
  • United States and Canada: one-page résumé, no photograph, no date of birth, no marital status or nationality
  • United Kingdom and Ireland: two-page CV, a three- or four-line personal statement at the top, referees usually noted as available on request
  • Germany: tabellarischer Lebenslauf, traditionally signed and dated at the foot, with an Anschreiben cover letter and scanned Zeugnisse appended as an Anlage
  • Australia: longer résumé with named referees, plus a separate written response to selection criteria for public sector roles
  • UAE: photograph, nationality, date of birth and visa status on the first page, with a +971 contact number where you have one
  • Some European research and mobility bodies: the EU's Europass CV, generated on the Europass platform rather than laid out by you — check the individual call, since Erasmus+ mobility itself is applied for on your institution's own form, and recruitment to the EU institutions runs through EPSO's application form rather than Europass

Will an applicant tracking system actually read my CV?

Yes, and it reads the page as a single stream of text, top to bottom and left to right. Parsing quality varies between platforms — Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, iCIMS and SuccessFactors do not all handle a file the same way, so a layout that survives one can lose content in another. The failure modes are predictable: a two-column design interleaves job titles with the skills list; a table splits one role across cells that emerge in an unpredictable order; contact details placed in a Word header or footer are frequently skipped altogether. The fix is dull and effective — one column, expected section names, one date format, and a text-based file rather than an image export.
  • Keep name, email, phone and city in the body of the document, never in the header or footer
  • Use headings the parser expects — Education, Work Experience, Skills — rather than 'My Journey'
  • Expand each abbreviation once: Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
  • Give job title, employer and dates their own line, with one date format throughout (Sept 2024 – June 2025)
  • Where the portal shows a parsed preview after upload — Workday and Taleo do — open it and correct whatever it has misread

How do I turn 'responsible for' into an achievement line?

Name the action, the method and the measured outcome in one sentence: what you did, how you did it, and what changed because of it. 'Responsible for the society's social media' becomes 'Ran the society's Instagram account, replacing ad-hoc posts with a weekly content calendar, and lifted monthly event attendance from around 20 to 55.' Write about your own contribution rather than the team's — 'Ran', not 'We ran' — with the subject implied and the pronoun left off the front of the line. With no formal work history the material sits in coursework, lab sessions, part-time retail or hospitality shifts, tutoring and society roles — each contains a scale, a count or a before-and-after once you look for it.
  • Numbers already in reach: cohort size, shifts covered, till float value, sample size, survey response rate, budget handled, stock lines counted
  • Australian public sector applications usually require a separate statement against selection criteria, structured as STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result — with most of the words spent on Action and Result
  • Verbs that carry a method: reconciled, rostered, calibrated, triaged, drafted, negotiated — in place of 'assisted with'
  • One line per achievement; if it needs two lines, it is probably two achievements or one too vague

What belongs on an academic CV that never belongs on a résumé?

An academic CV is a cumulative record rather than a two-page pitch, and it has no length ceiling — it grows as your output does. It carries sections a résumé never has: publications, conference presentations distinguished by type, funding and awards, teaching and demonstrating, supervision, and peer review. Include your ORCID iD as the full URI (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-2345-6789 — sixteen characters, hyphenated in fours; the last is a checksum and may be the letter X). Label unpublished work honestly as under review or in preparation. Format the publication list in the style your discipline actually publishes in — APA in psychology, Vancouver in medicine, Chicago notes in history — and bold your own name so a committee can find it in a multi-author string; how the main referencing styles compare sets out the differences.
  • Education in reverse-chronological order, with thesis or dissertation title and supervisor
  • Publications sub-divided: peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, under review, in preparation
  • Presentations marked as poster or oral, with conference name, city and year
  • Teaching listed by module code and title, with your actual role — demonstrator, marker, seminar leader

Is CV help the same kind of help as essay help?

Not quite. A CV is not marked coursework, so the integrity question here is factual rather than academic: every claim on the page has to be yours and checkable by whoever verifies it. Employers, job titles and dates are never invented, degree classifications and grades are never rounded up, and software or memberships you have not used do not appear. What changes is which role leads the page, how a duty is rewritten as an outcome, and whether the layout survives a parser — never the employers, dates or classifications underneath. If a placement scheme, scholarship or careers service requires an application to be entirely unaided, read its rules before asking anyone for input, ourselves included. Longer research documents are handled separately under dissertation and thesis assistance.

What do I send, and what comes back?

Send the draft you have written, the job advertisement or course page you are aiming at, and the country. Back comes that same document marked up: a comment against each suggested change explaining the convention behind it, a version reordered for that market, a parallel bullet worked on an invented profile so the pattern is visible twice, and a formatting checklist for the portal you are uploading to. Applications that pair a CV with a personal statement sit alongside statement of purpose support. Start through contact us, naming the country the application is for.

CV Writing Support: common questions

It depends on the destination. UK, Irish, US, Canadian and Australian employers do not expect one, and a photograph invites judgement on characteristics they should not be weighing. In Germany a Bewerbungsfoto remains customary, though since the Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz came into force in 2006 employers have moved away from insisting on one — a photograph is evidence of exposure to protected characteristics — and some vacancies run as anonymous applications. In the UAE a headshot is standard. Follow the destination market, not the template you downloaded.

One page for a US or Canadian résumé early in a career; two pages is the working standard for a UK or Irish CV; Australian résumés commonly run longer because they carry named referees and fuller role descriptions. Academic CVs have no ceiling, since completeness matters more than brevity there. Length is a consequence of relevance rather than a target — cut school-level detail once you have degree-level and work content to put in its place.

In the UAE, yes: nationality and current visa status are expected, because recruiters filter on whether sponsorship is required. In the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia and Germany the CV usually stays silent on it, and the application form asks its own eligibility question, which you answer there. Keep both answers consistent. Immigration rules shift, so confirm your current position with your university's international student advisers rather than trusting a template.

Follow whatever the portal asks for. Where it leaves the choice open, a text-based PDF exported from Word or Google Docs holds the layout and still parses. Never upload a scan or an image export — there is no text inside it to read. Design tools that draw the page as vector shapes, or lean on decorative icons, can produce a file that looks correct and parses badly. Where the portal shows you a parsed preview after uploading, open it and correct anything mangled.

No. You write the draft; the work happens on top of it. That means explaining what your target market expects, marking your document with the reasoning behind each suggested change, working a parallel example on a made-up profile so the pattern is visible, and proofreading the final version for consistency in dates, tense and spelling. The facts remain yours, because they have to be — they are checkable, and the person defending them at interview is you.
