Online Exam Preparation Support

Service overview

What you get with Online Exam Preparation Support

AMDEX Scholar Labs supports students preparing for online and open-book assessments: the timed quiz in Canvas, Moodle or Blackboard, the take-home paper with a fixed submission window, the proctored sitting in Inspera, WISEflow or Examplify, and the online viva. Preparation support means working through past papers and marking criteria with you, explaining how each question type is constructed, drafting parallel practice questions that you answer yourself, coaching the answers you write, and shaping a revision schedule around the structure of your actual paper. It also covers the mechanics students lose time to — one-way navigation, autosave behaviour, file-upload conventions, scanning handwritten work. Support stops before the assessment opens. Once your paper is live, what appears in it is yours alone. Everything below is about the preparation stage: reading a rubric, rehearsing against the clock, handling the software, and building answer structures that hold up when you are typing at speed.
  • Guidance built around your own brief and your marking rubric
  • Matched to a specialist who works in your subject area
  • Referencing explained and checked in your institution’s style — APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago and more
  • Feedback on your drafts while there is still time to act on it
  • Worked examples supplied as labelled models to study and cite, never to submit
  • Human expertise — nothing here is generated by AI

What do you need assistance with?

Is an open-book exam easier because you can use your notes?

Not usually. Open-book papers are written on the assumption that the material is already in front of you, so questions tend to ask you to apply, compare, or judge rather than reproduce. Time becomes the binding constraint: hunting through unindexed lecture slides costs minutes you cannot spare. Preparation therefore shifts from memorising content to building a retrieval system — a one-page index of where each topic sits, condensed formula and case sheets — backed by enough recall that you open a note to confirm a detail, never to learn one. Answer structures are worth rehearsing too, but write them out in your own words, and check what your paper permits before taking any prepared notes in. We work through your permitted-materials list and assist you in compressing it into something usable under pressure.

What does exam preparation support actually include?

Concrete, pre-assessment work on material you can study from. Sessions are built around the paper you are actually sitting, using its past versions, its published marking criteria, and its rubric wording. Nothing here touches a live paper.
  • Past-paper walkthroughs: unpacking what a question is testing, how a marker reads it, and what a strong answer plan looks like
  • Parallel practice questions written in the same style as your paper, for you to attempt before we discuss them
  • Feedback on the practice answers you write — structure, use of evidence, where an argument thins out
  • Timed mock sittings against the real clock, with a debrief on where minutes went
  • Revision scheduling: sequencing topics, spacing reviews, deciding what gets active practice and what gets a skim
  • Condensed revision material built from your paper — one-page topic indexes, formula and case sheets — plus answer structures you draft yourself and we critique beforehand, all labelled as study material and not written to be handed in

How do you build a revision plan from the paper itself?

Start from the paper's own structure rather than from the syllabus. Pull the rubric and past versions and note the number of sections, whether you choose questions ("answer three of six"), the stated weighting of each part, the permitted materials, and any calculator or word guidance. That tells you which topics can be dropped and which cannot. From there the plan runs on retrieval practice — closing the notes and reconstructing the answer — spaced reviews at widening intervals, and interleaved topics rather than one-subject blocks. Full timed mocks come last, once individual question types are steady. Talk to us about the paper you are preparing for.

What should I test in the exam platform before the day?

Everything mechanical, using the practice or demo attempt your department publishes. Check whether navigation is one-way and whether a question locks once answered, how often the attempt autosaves, and what happens to your session if the connection drops. If a lockdown browser such as Respondus LockDown Browser is required, install it and sit a practice attempt through it — that tool restricts your machine rather than watching you. If webcam proctoring is layered on top — Respondus Monitor, Proctorio or similar — also run the system check and rehearse the ID capture and any room scan. Examplify-style apps download the paper in advance and upload afterwards, so know your upload step. If the paper is a file submission, practise the whole chain: write, export to PDF, name it to the stated convention, upload, screenshot the receipt.

How do you rehearse subject-specific answer structures?

By drilling the structure your discipline's markers expect until it is automatic under time pressure. Law papers reward disciplined issue-spotting and an IRAC or CLEO progression through each issue. Nursing scenarios reward prioritisation using an assessment sequence such as ABCDE, and — where the question asks you to escalate or hand over — a structured communication frame such as SBAR. Quantitative papers reward visible workings — formula stated, inputs listed, result with units — so a marker can see the method you used and not only the final figure; check your own paper's rubric for how workings are treated. Economics answers usually expect a labelled diagram where the question turns on a model: draw it, then write prose that explains the mechanism step by step and stands on its own, referring to the diagram explicitly rather than leaving it to speak for itself. Statistics papers hand you output and ask for interpretation: name the test, report the test statistic with degrees of freedom where the test has them — a t or F does, Mann-Whitney U does not — give the p value, then state the decision in the study's own terms. Our SPSS support and essay writing coaching pages cover those two strands in more depth.

Where does preparation support stop?

At the moment your assessment opens. While a paper is live — a timed quiz, a proctored sitting, or a take-home window — there is no coaching, no answer checking and no proofreading of the script being assessed. Anything prepared beforehand is study material, labelled as such, and is not written to be handed in. Universities treat unauthorised assistance during an assessment as misconduct under their academic integrity regulations, and take-home scripts are routinely run through similarity software. Your own institution's rules on permitted materials, collaboration and AI tools are the authority; read them before you book any preparation.

Online Exam Preparation Support: common questions

No. Once the paper is released, the work has to be yours and ours stops. Book preparation for the weeks before instead: past-paper walkthroughs, parallel practice questions, feedback on answers you have written, and timed mocks. That is where the useful work sits anyway — a technique you rehearse in advance is worth far more than anything squeezed in during a live window.

Usually yes, and this catches people out. If your paper expects sources, the same conventions apply as in coursework: cite what you use, and follow the style your department specifies. Take-home papers with longer word counts often require a reference list; short timed quizzes often do not. Check the rubric wording, and see our comparison of referencing styles if you are unsure which conventions your school uses.

There is no useful number. One paper attempted under real time conditions and then properly debriefed teaches more than five skimmed for topic spotting. A workable pattern is to read one paper to map question types, plan answers for several questions without writing them out, then sit one or two complete papers to the clock. Repeat only if the debrief keeps surfacing new problems.

Yes. Preparation covers the questions examiners commonly work through, how to structure a spoken answer that has a claim and support rather than a ramble, and how to handle a challenge to your method without abandoning it. We can run mock questions and give feedback on your responses. The rehearsal happens beforehand; the viva itself is between you and your examiners.

Rehearse the scan as part of the mock. Handwrite a full answer to time, then photograph or scan it, combine the pages into a single PDF in the right order, name the file to your department's convention, and upload it. Time that whole sequence and add it to your exam plan. Also check legibility on screen — a page that reads fine on paper can lose detail once compressed.
