Model Essay Examples

Service overview

What you get with Model Essay Examples

A model essay example is a complete reference essay written on a question adjacent to yours, carrying margin annotations that name what each move is doing: where the thesis is stated, how a topic sentence controls its paragraph, how a quotation is introduced and then interpreted rather than left to speak for itself, and how the citation for that quotation is assembled in APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago 18th, Harvard (Cite Them Right 13th), OSCOLA 4th or Vancouver. The annotation is the product; the prose is only the specimen it sits on. Sadler (2010, Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education 35:5) argued that rubric words such as "critical" or "well-structured" carry tacit meaning students cannot extract from the wording alone, and need worked cases to attach the words to. Every exemplar here arrives with a reverse outline, a criteria-mapping sheet, and a first-page header marking it a reference document. None of it is written to the prompt you have been set.
  • Guidance built around your own brief and your marking rubric
  • Matched to a specialist who works in your subject area
  • Referencing explained and checked in your institution’s style — APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago and more
  • Feedback on your drafts while there is still time to act on it
  • Worked examples supplied as labelled models to study and cite, never to submit
  • Human expertise — nothing here is generated by AI

What do you need assistance with?

What is actually inside a model essay example?

Three layers over one text. The essay body, with its question and word count stated at the top. A margin layer that labels every structural move — thesis, signpost, topic sentence, evidence, interpretation, concession, refutation, transition — and explains why it sits at that point rather than another. And an apparatus layer that lets you test your own draft against it. The header names the document a reference specimen, and the question it answers is deliberately not yours.
  • Full essay text, question and target word count stated on page one
  • Margin notes naming each structural move and the reason for its placement
  • Reverse outline reducing every paragraph to a single-line claim, so the argument skeleton is visible on its own
  • Criteria-mapping sheet linking paragraphs to generic rubric wording
  • Complete in-text citations and reference list in the style you nominate

Why is the example written on a different question from mine?

Because an exemplar answering your assessed prompt would be a ghostwritten assignment with notes attached, and providing that is a criminal offence in several of the countries our readers study in. Part 4 of the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022 made providing or advertising contract cheating services an offence in England. Australia's TEQSA Amendment (Prohibiting Academic Cheating Services) Act 2020 does the same, and empowers TEQSA to have such sites blocked. Ireland's Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) (Amendment) Act 2019 inserted section 43A into the 2012 Act, and QQI brings the prosecutions. A parallel question keeps the method transferable and leaves the transfer — the part being assessed — with you.

Which referencing styles do the annotated examples cover?

Six, annotated at the mechanics that actually go wrong. APA 7th: author–date, with et al. from three authors onward in every citation including the first. MLA 9th: the nine-element template assembled into a Works Cited entry. Chicago 18th (published September 2024): notes–bibliography for history and the arts, author–date for the social sciences. Harvard as set out in Cite Them Right 13th, where book references carry no place of publication. OSCOLA 4th: footnotes only, no in-text citation, minimal punctuation, no full stops in initials. Vancouver: numbered in order of appearance. A side-by-side comparison sits in referencing styles compared.

How do the examples show the difference between grade bands?

By pairing. The same question is answered twice at different standards, and the annotations mark what separates the two documents: interpretation following evidence rather than evidence left standing alone, counterarguments engaged rather than listed, a conclusion that advances the argument rather than restating it. Band labels follow the system you study under — UK honours boundaries at 70, 60, 50 and 40; Australia's High Distinction, Distinction, Credit and Pass, whose cut-offs differ by institution (Monash sets HD at 80, UNSW at 85); Germany's 1.0 to 5.0 scale, where 4.0 is the lowest pass rather than a middling result. Boundaries are institutional, so your module handbook overrides any generic sheet.

Can I reuse sentences or paragraphs from the example?

No. Turnitin and comparable text-matching tools compare submissions against previously submitted work, repository content and the open web, and reused exemplar prose is exactly what they are built to surface. What transfers is shape, not wording: the sequence claim, evidence, interpretation, link; the placement of a concession before a refutation; the habit of ending a paragraph on your own analysis rather than on a source. Rebuild those moves with your own material and your own sentences. If you would rather have your existing draft checked line by line, that is essay editing and proofreading.

How should I use an exemplar while drafting?

Read the annotations before the essay, so you meet the moves as labels rather than as finished prose. Then work in this order, keeping the exemplar closed while you write.
  • Reverse-outline the exemplar yourself and compare your version against the supplied one — the gaps show what you are not yet seeing
  • Reverse-outline your own draft the same way and set the two skeletons beside each other
  • Fix structural gaps first: a paragraph with no controlling claim, evidence with no interpretation after it, a thesis that the body never returns to
  • Close the exemplar and revise your sentences without it open
  • Take the redraft into essay writing coaching if you want the reasoning examined rather than the surface

Model Essay Examples: common questions

No. Reading a labelled reference document and analysing how it is built is study; presenting its sentences as your own writing is plagiarism, and text-matching software is designed to catch it. Many departments circulate their own annotated exemplars and treat outside ones differently, so if your module handbook names a permitted exemplar bank, work from that first and use ours for the annotation layer it does not supply. The exemplar is a teaching object, not a draft.

Yes. Expository, descriptive, reflective, comparative, literature review and law problem questions each get their own annotation set, because the moves differ. A reflective piece annotated against Gibbs' Reflective Cycle (1988) marks description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan as distinct stages. A law problem question annotated for IRAC marks issue, rule, application and conclusion. Applying argumentative-essay annotations to either would mislabel every paragraph.

Yes, and subject matters more than most students expect. Nursing exemplars usually carry a reflective model and Vancouver or APA citations; law exemplars use OSCOLA footnotes and problem-question structure; management and economics exemplars often need Harvard and a data or case component. A generic humanities essay annotated for a nursing module teaches the wrong conventions. Say which discipline and which style your handbook specifies when you get in touch.

Direction of travel. An exemplar is a finished text you take apart to see how the moves work before you start writing. Coaching starts from something you have already written and works on the reasoning inside it — whether the thesis is arguable, whether the evidence supports the claim made of it, whether the counterargument is real. Many students use an exemplar early and coaching at redraft stage; how essay support works sets out the sequence.

Yes, and it is often more useful than a supplied specimen. The same annotation layers are applied to your draft: each paragraph reduced to its controlling claim, evidence flagged where interpretation is missing, citations checked against the style your handbook names, and structural comments in the margin. You keep authorship throughout, since the notes describe what your text is doing and what it is not yet doing rather than rewriting it for you.
