Essay Writing Coaching

Service overview

What you get with Essay Writing Coaching

Essay writing coaching is a one-to-one session held over the essay you are already writing — your plan, your draft, or the feedback sheet from the last one. A coach works through the document with you: breaking the question into its instruction verb, topic and limiting words, testing whether your thesis states something a reasonable person could dispute, and reverse-outlining what each paragraph actually does against what it claims to do. Sessions cover argumentative, expository, comparative, reflective and literature-based essays, and the conventions students meet in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany and the UAE. You finish with your own annotated plan and a revision list in priority order, written in your words during the session, plus the reasoning behind each change so the same diagnosis works on the next essay. The coaching is about method. The writing stays yours.
  • Guidance built around your own brief and your marking rubric
  • Matched to a specialist who works in your subject area
  • Referencing explained and checked in your institution’s style — APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago and more
  • Feedback on your drafts while there is still time to act on it
  • Worked examples supplied as labelled models to study and cite, never to submit
  • Human expertise — nothing here is generated by AI

What do you need assistance with?

What actually happens in an essay coaching session?

You share the draft and the assignment brief, and the session runs in a fixed order so nothing gets skipped: question deconstruction, thesis test, structure map, paragraph audit, evidence check, revision list. The coach usually asks you to explain your argument aloud before reading a word of it — the gap between what you meant and what the page says is what the exercise is designed to expose. Nothing is rewritten in your file. The coach annotates and asks questions; you make the edits, in the session or after it.
  • Question deconstruction: separating the instruction verb (discuss, evaluate, critically assess) from the topic and the limiting words that fix scope
  • Thesis test: could an informed reader disagree with this sentence? If not, it is a description, not an argument
  • Reverse outline: one line per paragraph stating its claim, then checking whether the sequence adds up to a case
  • Paragraph audit against PEEL (point, evidence, explanation, link), or its TEEL relabelling — and which element is missing
  • Evidence check: is each source doing analytical work, or is it decoration around a point you already made?
  • A prioritised revision list you write yourself, so you leave with actions rather than notes

How do I turn a descriptive essay into an analytical one?

By supplying the reasoning that connects evidence to claim. Toulmin's model of argument names six parts — claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier and rebuttal — and descriptive writing typically stops after the grounds: the quotation is there, the study is cited, and the sentence ends. The warrant — the assumption that makes that evidence count for your claim — can be stated or left implicit, and in descriptive writing it is almost always left implicit. Coaching drills the question that surfaces it: after each piece of evidence, why does this support the point rather than merely sit near it? Sessions also work on qualifying claims accurately and placing counterargument where it strengthens rather than concedes.

Can coaching help me decode my marking rubric?

Yes — decoding the rubric is usually the first thing a session does with a marked draft. Rubrics are typically written as band descriptors against named criteria such as argument and analysis, use of sources, structure and coherence, and presentation and referencing, and coaching works from the one your department actually issued rather than a generic template. Each criterion is mapped to a physical location in your draft, so "needs more critical engagement" becomes a specific instruction: add a limitation to paragraph four, qualify the claim in paragraph six. Tutor comments on a previously marked essay are treated the same way, converted into a feed-forward checklist you apply to the essay in front of you.

Do you write the essay for me?

No. Coaching works on text you authored. Where a technique needs demonstrating rather than describing, the coach works a parallel example on a different question, so you see the move performed without any of it belonging in your assessed document. The only thing you leave a session with in writing is your own annotated plan and revision list; if the coach hands over a worked parallel example, it is labelled and sourced as a reference document, meant to be read and cited rather than transplanted. If you want the mechanics of that boundary set out before booking, how essay support works explains what is produced at each stage and what remains your responsibility.

How is coaching different from proofreading or a worked example?

They solve different problems and belong at different points. Coaching is diagnostic and happens while the argument is still moving — it changes what the essay says. Proofreading comes last, once the content is settled, and works on grammar, register, consistency and reference formatting; see essay editing and proofreading. A worked example is a labelled reference essay on a parallel question, useful when you have never seen the genre before; see model essay examples. A sensible sequence is coach the plan, draft it yourself, coach the draft, proofread once.

Does coaching cover sources and referencing?

Yes, at two levels. First, source selection: triaging what you have found against currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose, and telling an empirical study apart from a review, a commentary and a press summary — because the four carry different evidential weight in your argument. Second, integration: introducing a quotation, analysing it, and linking back, plus the line between legitimate paraphrase and patchwriting. A session checks your citations against the style your department actually issued — APA, MLA, a Harvard variant, OSCOLA in UK law, Vancouver in nursing and medicine — for the errors that recur across a draft rather than one at a time; referencing styles compared sets out the differences.

Essay Writing Coaching: common questions

Argumentative and persuasive essays, expository and explanatory pieces, comparative and cause-and-effect essays, reflective writing, critical literature reviews, and the extended essays set in humanities and social science modules. Timed exam essays are coached differently, focusing on planning under pressure and paragraph triage rather than redrafting. Coaching also fits essay-shaped components inside larger submissions, such as the discussion section of a report or the rationale in a portfolio.

It is the best point, not too early. Structural problems are cheap to fix in an outline and expensive to fix in fifteen hundred written words, because by then every fix means rewriting paragraphs you are attached to. A planning session covers question deconstruction, a working thesis, a paragraph-by-paragraph claim map and a check that your source list can actually support that map before you commit to it.

Yes. Sessions address the features that mark academic register specifically: hedging and qualification, nominalisation, cohesive devices between sentences, article and preposition use in stock academic phrases, and consistency between British and American spelling conventions once you have chosen one. This is coaching on academic writing rather than a general language course, so it works best alongside your institution's language support rather than in place of it.

Discussing method, structure and feedback over work you wrote yourself is ordinary academic practice — it is what a writing centre appointment or a supervision meeting consists of. What institutions prohibit is having assessed text produced for a student. Coaching sessions stay on the first side of that line: the file remains in your hands and the edits are made by you. Some institutions ask you to record tutorial or writing-centre support in an acknowledgements note; check your assessment regulations for whether a coaching session falls under that requirement.

Yes. A returned essay is the most useful document you can bring, because it shows a marker's actual reading of your writing rather than your own. Sessions translate comments into repeatable rules — what "unsupported" meant in that paragraph, which structural habit produced "hard to follow" — and then test the current draft against them. The session groups repeated comments to see whether they point back to one habit or to separate faults.
